Interesting yet sane male wanted to share Hawthorne-area house with two other guys by March 1st
Sorry for making this ad longer than the Old Testament, but it seems like the more info you have, the better. So...
LOOKING FOR
... a guy who is interesting, motivated, and active but also sane, relaxed, and balanced to share a 3 bedroom, 1 bath house with two other guys, ages 30 & 42. You should be clean, considerate, and absolutely positively able to pay the rent and all bills in full on the first of the month without fail. Hobbies, interests, and a social life are big plusses, as are outdoorsiness, bike ridey-ness, and Earth lovin' tree hugginess. One of us is a gay vegetarian; so you must be gay friendly (obviously) & vegetarian friendly. Both of us are hoping for someone who will interact in the common areas and not hide away in his room all the time, though becoming best buds is not at all necessary. Ideally, you will also be a non-smoker, headphone wearer, and cell phone hating low talker, but those may be mere daydreams.
Please note: It is EXTREMELY important that you not have any drug or alcohol addicitions and that you are not a TV or video game zombie.
Also, pets of any kind are not allowed by the landlords. This includes "great" cats and "really well trained" dogs.
THE HOUSE
3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. Classic Portland wooden bungalow in a great location. Large living room, large dining room, and big kitchen with walk-in pantry, washer & dryer, and every dish and cooking implement know to mankind. Common areas are mostly furnished with mismatched but decent cast-offs from former roommates. If you have nothing, no problem. If you have a lot of stuff, we can easily get rid of furniture to make room. The place is kind of spartan after the person with most of the art & furniture moved out; so there is an opportunity to decorate if you are so inclined. There's a big front porch with a slowly bio-degrading sofa. Small back porch with table & chairs. Shady back yard with big trees, a compost ring, and a fire pit. Covered bike parking. Some clean, dry storage space upstairs. Lots of damp storage space in the full (dirt floor) basement. A little garden space in the front borders, with raised beds a possibliity in the near future.
Your room is downstairs and what I would call a "normal" size bedroom (about 11'x12'-ish), with a closet and one big-ish window facing west.
One thing to consider is that the house is not renovated. It is carpeted; the floors slope, and the doorways are crooked. The front porch is sinking noticably. The windows are original wooden casings with single panes of glass. So the wind goes right through. I myself think of it as character. Another concern is that the house is next door to a bar parking lot that gets noisy at closing time. Your window will look directly out into it; so you should not be a light sleeper. However, it is mostly a concern in the summer when windows are open.
THE LOCATION
Between SE Hawthorne & Division, off 37th. Incredibly convenient to Hawthorne, Division & Clinton Street restaurants, shops & bars. Just steps away from two major bus routes (the 4 & 75), with four more (10, 9, 14, and 15) an easy walk. Ten minute walk to Fred Meyer. Twenty minute walk to New Seasons and the People's Co-op. Twenty minute bike ride to downtown on designated bike boulevards. Easy walk to Mt Tabor and Laurelhurst, as well as several other parks.
THE ROOMMATES
I'm John, a gay, male, 42 year-old transplant from the South. Been in Portland six-ish years, and in this house five of those. Vegetarian, but not really much of a hippy. Bike enthusiast who doesn't own a car. Avid crafter, gardener, hiker. Big do-it-yourselfer. Work part-time at home in a small office and part-time at an outdoor retailer. It also goes without saying, I think, that I'm a liberal atheist.
Your other roomie is Morgan. He describes himself as... "30, interested and interesting (I think), hiker, easy going, out going, also really enjoy reading at home, playing chess, kite boarding, biking, hanging with friends. I'm a social worker, npr listener. I do hate cell phones even though I own one. Don't smoke, wear headphones when I listen to music at night. Play guitar. And like to cook a lot."
You'll be meeting and talking to me (John) first since Morgan is on a meditation retreat though the end of the week.
THE BUSINESS
Rent for your room is $365. Deposit is also $365. Landlords require an application and fee of $35.
Utilities include gas, electricity, DSL, and water, and they fluctuate widely from summer to winter. Low end is about $60 per person per month in summer up to $150 in the worst of the winter when the water bill comes. That is pretty much right now; so you will actually just miss it.
Since another possible housemate fell through, the room is available immediately, and I would prefer that it be occupied by March 1st. However, if you are just pure magic on a stick, God's gift to roommates, I will consider a slightly later move in date.
Thanks for reading! Hope to hear from you soon.
